The Amazon Company has just announced the release of a new and free software update for the 2nd Generation Kindle. The software is very easy to download and use. Its new features are:
- PDF Pan and Zoom: Allows you to zoom PDF files and pan around to see detailed or small print graphics and tables
- Collections: Allows you to set up audiobooks, books and personal documents into different collections. However, at the moment you can’t add subscriptions (blogs, magazines or newspapers) to Kindle collections.
- Password Protection: Allows you to protect your Kindle Amazon device when it’s not in use.
- Facebook & Twitter Posts: Allows you to post interesting book passages from your Kindle Amazon device and share it with your friends on Twitter and Facebook.
- Improved Clarity & More Font Sizes: Allows you to use sharper and larger fonts to enjoy reading experience even more.
- Popular Highlights: Popular Highlights. Allows you to get in touch with the Kindle community and see the most interesting parts of the books you’re enjoying.
How to Apply Kindle Software Updates
If your software version is earlier than 2.5, you can download the latest software update for Kindle and transfer it via USB to your device.
You can find the latest software version installed on the Kindle DX Graphite so it does not require any updates.
To see what Kindle software version you have, you should open the Settings screen and see the information at the bottom of the screen:
How to Download Kindle 2.5 Software Update:
- Make sure which type of Kindle you have. You should look at the first four digits of the serial number or at the certification symbol (they can be seen on the back of the device) and then compare the numbers to the images below. If your Kindle has a cover, follow the instructions to remove the cover and only after that check the serial number on the back of your Kindle.

- Transmit the software to your Kindle device: Switch on your Kindle, then connect it to the computer with the USB cable. Use the file browser to find the software update file on your computer and copy it to the Kindle root directory (you will find several folders in the root directory, such as “music”, “documents” and “audible”. The root directory normally has a “device” icon).
- Ensure the file transfer, then disconnect: Make sure that the update file has transferred to the Kindle before disconnecting the device from the computer. After the successful transfer eject the device to disconnect it safely. Take the USB cable out of the Kindle and of the computer.
- Start the update: Go the Home screen; Open the Menu and then “Settings”. Then press the Menu key once again to select the “Update Your Kindle” option (if the latest available update has already been installed, this option will be in the grey color). If you want to update Kindle software, select “Ok”.
